Not every poster can be as fun as the next. We can only try to gather our marbles as designers and move forward in the design process. Ideas don’t come so easy when you are designing something you don’t feel very passionate about. Thats why I am all about brainstorming. What am I going to do next? Where do I go from here? Would this work? What about this? Its spring, why not flowers? I start to gather inspiration from other things outside of the project definition and try to implement them into the project. Yes, sometimes I can take it way too far. Sometimes it needs to go that far. And sometimes, I quickly press delete. Its okay though because its all apart of the process. How would I know if something works or not if I don’t experiment with the different ideas that go in and out of my head. I think that when an opportunity to fail comes, I should be pushing for success, while not trying to take the easiest way out. Its important to me to really discover whats bad and whats good, and poster design is the easiest project to play around and find what works and what doesn’t.
This is why I think poster design is so important. Its the cheapest of all jobs that can be inquired and I like to do them. These kinds of projects can range from the simplest of tasks to a bitter sweet job that pushes towards an upcoming deadline. Below are some examples of posters that I have done as an intern for Black Hawk College in Moline, IL. Mind you, nothing gets past the clients perspective of what looks good, and most of the time the idea gets spit on and stomped on because of one or more different points of view. Thats natural. Thats apart of the game. You can only push forward, and give the client what they want, no matter how horrible their decisions might be.
With this in mind, I think that an exercise is in order. The posters that you see deserve a self critique, and I would love for you to critique it as well! Let me know what you think. I am putting posters up that range from what I would consider good to what I would consider terrible! So have fun!
